Cleaning Small Kitchen Appliances

You’d think that those of us who utilize the same appliances everyday would be experts at keeping them clean. But when coffee and waffles are at the mind’s forefront, it can be easy to ignore chores. That’s not to say that you need to do a thorough air fryer cleaning before you head off to work, but you should practice proper maintenance on all your devices. Here’s how:

Toaster

1. Unplug appliance and wait until it’s cooled down

2. Turn the toaster upside down and gently give it a little shake over a sink or trans bin. Brush out inside crumbs with a small brush in the slots

3. Remove the bottom crumb tray and dump out waste in trash

4. Wash away any food remnants on tray with a damp sponge and a little dish soap. Make sure tray is fully dry before re-inserting

5. Clean the exterior with cloth or paper towel and soap solution. Avoid harsh cleaning products

Air Fryer

1. Unplug appliance and wait until it’s cooled down

2. Wipe exterior with a damp cloth

3. Clean inside of appliance with with hot water and soft sponge

4. Turn it upside down to wipe heating element with a non-abrasive sponge

5. Scrub stuck-on food particles with a water and baking soda paste and wipe dry with a cloth

6. Load basket and pan into dishwasher (check manual first) or hand-wash in sink. If tough residue won’t budge, soak items in hot water and then resume cleaning

7. Let all parts fully dry before putting back in place

Keurig

1. Unplug appliance

2. Remove water reservoir and mug stand and wash parts with warm soapy water

3. Wipe down machine and coffee pod holder with a cloth to remove dirt and dust, dampen if needed

4. Use white distilled vinegar or Keurig brand cleaning solution to remove lime and scale buildup. Fill water reservoir halfway with solution and the other half with water.

5. Run the appliance until water reservoir is empty

6. Complete the cleaning with another cycle of just water through the reservoir

Waffle Iron

1. Unplug appliance and wait until it’s cooled down

2. Wipe away crumbs and soak up grease on the grid plates with dry paper towel or cloth

For attached plates:

3. Clean the iron with a soft-bristled brush or damp cloth. For tough residue, lay a warm, wet cloth across the grids and close the iron, allowing it to soak into the grime, then brush remnants away

4. If you need further assistance removing baked on particles, pour a few drops of cooking oil onto the the grates and give it a couple minutes to soften up. Wipe away with paper towel or cloth

5. Cleanse the exterior with a warm cloth and wipe off residue

For removable plates:

3. Detach plates and soak in warm water with dish soap

4. Clean pieces with a sponge or brush until residue is gone (*It’s best to avoid the dishwasher as hot water and harsh detergent can damage nonstick surfaces)

5. Rinse off plates and dry

6. Cleanse the exterior with a warm cloth and wipe off residue

Toaster Oven

 

1. Unplug appliance and wait until it’s cooled down

2. Remove trays and gently shake out crumbs. Use a soft brush to remove stuck-on pieces

3. Use a non-abrasive sponge to scrub rack with soap and water and set aside to dry

4. Clean the interior and both sides of the glass door with a natural cleaner or solution of water and vinegar with a sponge or cloth

5. Wipe down the exterior with cloth or paper towel and any of the before mentioned cleaners

Coffee Maker

1. Dump out any remaining grounds in the basket

2. Wash removable parts

3. Cleanse and decalcify machine by brewing a mix of half water and half white vinegar halfway. Make sure the pot is in place and use a clean filter. At the halfway mark, turn off the machine and wait 30 minutes

4 .Turn appliance back on, finish brewing, and discard contents (don’t forget filter)

5. Rinse out everything, insert a new filter, and brew again only using water this time, then repeat once more
